Biography
The broad research interests of the group of Prof. Sebastian C. Peter are focused on the synthesis and properties of novel solid-state inorganic materials. The compounds are being synthesized by wide variety of techniques both in solid state and solution methods. We focus extensively on the growth of single crystal of interesting compounds by various methods. Every compounds synthesized will be characterized in detail for their crystal structure by X-ray diffraction and phase analysis using different microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. In intermetallics, a special attention is given towards the compounds containing rare earths especially Ce, Eu and Yb because of the presence of an unstable electronic 4f-shell. Every new compound discovered displayed a novel situation in the physical properties such as magnetism, Kondo effect, heavy-Fermion and superconductivity. In another project, the low cost nanomaterials in the form of alloys, intermetallics, bimetallics, core-shell etc are being developing as the replacement for Pt and other expensive current state-of-the-art materials for the production of green energy in fuel cell and CO2 reduction. The group also focuses on the design and synthesis of novel supramolecular inorganic-organic hybrids based on polyoxometalates for their potential applications in energy and catalysis. The other areas we are focusing on the application of these materials as supercapacitors, which are also electrochemical energy storage devices. Since the science is boundless and the group has advanced expertise in the field of material design and synthesis, we also focus on various other applications of our materials as topological insulator, catalysts of various important industrial chemical reactions, battery, thermoelectric and so on. Professor Peter is a member of the Editorial Board for Journal of Solid State Chemistry and Advances in Chemistry. He has more than 110 peer-reviewed publications in international journals and 4 patents.
