Dr.G.S.Avadhani was born in Satara district of Maharashtra state (India), in 1959. He received his B.Sc. Physics (Hons) from Poona University in 1979. Later he did his M.Sc. (Physics) & M.Phil.(Physics) from Nagpur University in 1981 and 83 respectively. He joined Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in 1988 as a Scientific Officer after several years of work experience in R&D and PG teaching in Electronics Instrumentation for Space Physics Applications and Digital Electronics & Microprocessors respectively at Nagpur University, Nagpur, India.
At IISc, he was in-charge of SEM/TEM and FEG SEM. While in service, he did his M.Sc.(Engg.) and Ph.D. in the broad field of Mechanical Metalurgy in general and Hot Deformation Processing in particular, in 1997 and 2002 respectively. He has had experience of R&D and PG teaching at IISc in the dept.of Metallurgy (presently, Materials Engg.) and guided a large no. of ME students in their research projects for the degree along with another colleague, Prof.SatyamSuwas.
Also, he has completed a research project for Dept.of Space, Govt. India, in 2003-04, and a large no.of consultancy projects during his service in the last three decades at IISc.
He has been involved in the new UG course started by IISc, since its inception (2011) and was instrumental in setting up their lab.in Manufacturing Processes.
His research work has been in the field of optimization of process parameters (Temperature and Strain Rate) for achieving good hot workability and structural integrity with the help of Processing Maps. This is particularly important for the manufacture of advanced materials like Maraging Steels and light materials like Magnesium alloys for aerospace industry as it would reduce wastage during production and thereby cut down the cost of production and also save energy. Most of his work has been published in reputed international journals and also in the book, “Hot Working Guide”, published by ASM Intl, Materials Park, OH, USA. The second edition of the book, where in, processing maps for more than 300 materials are incorporated, edited by Y V R K Prasad, K P Rao and S Sashidhara, has been published in 2015.
Also, out of his vast experience in materials characterization using electron microscopy over the years, many papers have emerged from the joint research work undertaken in nano-materials design and development fields.
Further, his contribution in ME thesis guidance for many students since 2011, has been in the field of Severe Plastic Deformation and Texture studies of Magnesium alloys and other materials which has resulted in many recent publications (see enclosure). He has a total of 38 research publications to his credit including international journals and conference presentations.
Besides keen interests in scientific pursuits and sports, he also has a flair for classical music. Thus he holds a degree in Hidustani Classical Music (Vocal).

A conference entitled: “Discussion meeting on Processing Maps and their Applications (DPMA-2003)”; was organized by Dr.G.S.Avadhani as the Convener, on April 28, 2003. The papers presented in the conference were published in the special issue brought out by Journal of Materials Engg. & Performance (JMEP) Vol.12, No.6, Dec.2003.
Involved in large numbers of national and international conferences (both at the technical & non-technical levels), seminars and symposia conducted by the department. As a member of the organizing committee, special assistance was rendered in organizing conferences as regards to preparatory tasks such as hall arrangements, display of posters, streamlining the registration process, arranging accommodation for registered delegates and facilitating a smooth transportation of delegates to and from the conference venue, during last 29 years of service at Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, India.
