Assistant Professor

Biography

Prof. Iman Roqan is a founding faculty member at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). She is said to be the first Saudi women to build an international laboratory in Saudi Arabia. At KAUST, she heads the Semiconductor and Material Spectroscopy Group, which comprises members from Saudi Arabia, GCC countries, India, Nigeria, Uganda, China, Mexico and Europe. Although Dr. Roqan faced several challenges in becoming a female scientist in the field of semiconductor materials, she is now well known in the field.

Dr. Roqan’s research focuses on optical materials for optoelectronic devices. Mainly, she works on wide-band-gap semiconductors. She has developed many fabrication methods to improve the functionality of these materials. She has published many papers in international scientific journals and has contributed to two US patents. Her students have received awards from the Material Science Society and the Intel International Competition, both located in the US. She has trained several researchers and postgraduate students, including many Saudi students during their master’s degree studies, who are now working in leading Saudi companies and institutes such as SABIC, ARAMCO, and King Abdullah City of Atomic and Renewable Energy (KACARE). She is particularly proud of one of her students, Abdulaziz Baras, who is now a pioneer in solar energy in the Middle East as a researcher at KACARE. She has been invited to many international conferences in the US, India, Singapore, Turkey and Europe to present her work, attesting to the importance of her work.

Recently, Prof. Roqan received two awards. In 2012, she received a prestigious international teaching award from the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) and the American Physics Society (APS), recognizing her dedication to enhancing the understanding and appreciation of physics through teaching. In 2015, she received a young scientist award from the Venus International Foundation (VIF) in India. VIF was established in 2015 with the mission of making meaningful impacts on supporting results-oriented approaches in education and human services with a keen focus on relevant issues, needs and opportunities. The foundation is headquartered in Chennai and is governed by a Board of Trustees.
