Dr Janes was born in the North East of England. She qualified as a Registered Nurse from the Newcastle upon Tyne School of Nursing in 1984, gaining a Diploma in Nursing from London University, BSc(Hons) Professional Studies in Healthcare, MA Advancing Practice and Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education from Teesside University before completing her PhD at the University of Wolverhampton.
Following a nursing career as a clinician, service manager and clinical mentor in a range of specialities and settings, Dr Janes has taught leadership and quality improvement in Higher Education since 2001.She was a member of the National Reference Group for Service Improvement and currently leads healthcare quality, safety, governance and Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors recognisedprogrammes at Teesside University. She has extensive experience of teaching, new programme development and leading learning and teaching (L&T) innovation across academic levels.She is an experienced leadership development coach, licensed Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator (MBTI) Step II practitioner and a nationally accredited 3600 leadershipfeedback facilitator since 2004.
Her interests include Human Factors and patient safety, authentic assessment and the impact of learning on service delivery, action learning and academic leadership. She is an experienced External Examiner, programme validation panellist and L&T/service improvement consultant having provided consultancy for healthcare organisations, the National Institute for Innovation and Improvement and Academic Health Science Network.
Dr Janes is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, past fellow of the Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL4HealthNE) and a member of the NHS Improvement/Health Foundation Q Founding Cohort growing quality improvement capability and capacity at pace and scale across the UK. She is a member of a Health Education England Human Factors Steering Group and the only academic member of the Academic Health Sciences Network NENC/Patient Safety Collaborative/Q Executive Steering Group.
Her PhD focused on silences research exploring the recovery experiences of young people with fragility hip fracture to enhance care provision for this client group. She is very proud to be a nurse, but totally committed to working collaboratively with others to enhance the quality of care and very much looking forward to contributing to the conference as a member of the 2018 organising committee.
