Dr. Orly Toren, was born in Israel . She is a Registered Nurse, assistant director of patient safety and risk management unit, at the Hadassah Hebrew University Medical center. Dr. Toren has a graduate degree (MSc) in management from the Tel Aviv University (cum laude) and a doctoral degree (PhD) in nursing from Pittsburgh University, USA (cum laude). She is an expert in nursing management and hold a professional degree as a nurse practitioner in nursing policy and management from the Israeli Ministry of Health.
Dr. Toren has thirty five years of experience in nursing, in different managerial roles, academic activities and research. In her current position, she is responsible for promoting patient safety in the hospital. In her former roles, she was the Director of Nursing and Paramedical Professions at the Sheba Medical Center, the largest hospital in Israel (1700 beds). A major part of this role was to promote the hospital nursing professionals, including 2500 workers; to establish a working system that fit the internal and external demands of the organization, and to strive to reach a level of excellence in all aspects of care.Dr. Toren is also holding a certificate of expert nurse in the field Nursing Policy and Administration, and currently serves as a consultant to the Academic College of Kiriat Ono to establish a new nursing school within the faculty of Health professions.
As a faculty member at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem ,she teaches at the School of Nursing and the School of Public health. Her main research focus is on management, manpower and healthcare policy. She has published her work both in scientific conferences and journals. Orly has written a book on nursing Management (Hebrew), and several chapters on the Israeli Health Care System in International books. Her research is published both in national and international literature, and her books are included in syllabuses of nursing education related to nursing management and health policy. In her hospital she is holding the position for many years as a chair of the internal IRB committee.
She is involved in different committees in the national level appointed by the General Director of the Ministry of Health, or the Civil Servant Commission, the nursing Ethics bureau, and the Council for Higher Education. To name only few of the committees: the Committee for Evaluation of Nursing Manpower Characteristics in Israel; several committees to evaluate risk management in hospitals; a committee to plan nursing roles for the future; A quality assurance committee, and a committee for improving activities and services of hospitals. She is also involved in leading National projects. She is also a guest lecturer for graduate students in the school of Nursing and the School of Public health, giving courses in her areas of expertise.
