Welcome Note by Dr. Gillian Janes

Hello and welcome to Nursing USA 2018. This international conference and exhibition will run from the 29^th to the 31^st January in Las Vegas. My name is Gill Janes. I’m a Registered Nurse working at Teesside University in the North East of England, UK.  If you are a clinician, student, manager or researcher who wants to make a difference, be encouraged and inspired, learn something new or develop your professional impact – then I believe this conference is for you.

I’m passionate about nursing and the impact nurses can have on health outcomes at individual through to global level. This conference is a wonderful opportunity for like-minded healthcare professionals from across the globe to get up to date on the most recent developments, share ideas with and learn from experts in the field and develop new professional networks – this means we’ll return to the workplace even better equipped to enhance the quality of care, influence health care policy and the nursing profession itself. 

In my view, nursing is a wonderfully diverse profession and the 2018 conference will focus on using this diversity to help lead the innovation required to address current and future global health challenges. The conference themes focus on a range of clinical specialties as well as healthcare education, management, and research so there truly is something for everyone.

My background is a quality improvement and leading innovation and change in healthcare. I believe much has been achieved in these areas – and whilst we must get better at celebrating that success – there is still a lot to do. I’m continually learning – from the public, patients and families and the students I work with, as well as the so-called experts. At the conference, I’ll be speaking on the inadvertent marginalization of patients arising from professional and social norms in healthcare. I’ll be encouraging delegates to explore this wider issue using the findings from a recent study I undertook, that used a new research tool called The Silences Framework – to explore the recovery experiences of people under 60 with a fragility hip fracture.

I’m very much looking forward to a big dose of new learning and inspiration from this not to be missed the conference. It’s, therefore, my very great privilege to commend it to you and I look forward to meeting you there in person.
